Earth Day 2025: How are airlines actually doing on sustainability?
Announcing SimpliFlying’s new Sustainable Aviation Insights Platform.
We hear a lot about aviation’s path to net zero. But how are airlines actually moving forward?
To mark this Earth Day, we’re launching SimpliFlying’s new Sustainable Aviation Insights Platform — an interactive companion to our second annual Outlook Survey, with data from 22 global airlines. It offers a closer look at how airlines are structuring sustainability teams, allocating budgets, updating reporting practices, and adjusting their SAF strategies.
What we’re seeing in the data
Fleet renewal has become the top priority, with 82% of airlines now investing in new aircraft as a core decarbonisation strategy;
SAF adoption remains limited, despite 73% of airlines having formal uptake plans;
Monthly sustainability reporting has more than doubled since last year;
Fewer airlines are publicly communicating progress, with only 5% openly sharing sustainability updates;
Budgets are still growing, but nearly half of the respondents now choose not to disclose their allocations.
The data points to a more focused and cautious phase in aviation’s sustainability journey — one where internal systems are strengthening, while external messaging becomes more measured.
